Weight Loss - Fad Diets: Why Are They Bad? Part 2

It should come as no surprise that many people wonder why fad diets are bad when it comes to results. You will find many such sites on the Internet that claim to lose weight in a few days. That kind of weight loss is always temporary. It's usually 90% water that will be put right back in after your body rehydrates, which it should if you're not going to suffer serious health problems or die.

Other fad diets are not crash diets with such obviously outrageous claims, but rather highly publicized diet plans that hang around for a while and usually make a lot of money for the inventor from the sale of the product in question. At best these are good nutrition plans that will help you lose weight, but you can probably get them for free from your doctor. In the worst case, it will be so difficult to follow them that you will give up after a week. The downside of fad diets

1. Diets that promise quick and easy weight loss are often based on eating more than one type of food and none of the others. They do not provide the benefits that you would get from a balanced diet. They may suggest that you take supplements, but many supplements are not absorbed by the body unless they are taken with foods that have been prohibited by the diet. After a few weeks, if you follow it for that long, you may start to develop nutritional deficiencies.

2. Fad diets are often boring and more restrictive. After the first day or two of novelty, you won't enjoy your food. Then you will start to crave continuously and break the diet. You may even feel guilty, thinking it's your fault that you didn't lose weight.

3. Most fad diets don't follow the recommendations of the American Heart Association and similar bodies for dietary fat levels. Often the diet will recommend high-fat, low-carbohydrate foods that can lead to heart disease if eaten over a long period of time. Promoters may tell you that the diet should only be followed for a short period of time. But you probably won't reach your ideal weight in that time, and then what? Either you continue with a plan that isn't good for your health, or you stop and possibly gain back what you've lost.

4. Many fad diets don't help you include adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables in your weight loss program, or provide the variety of foods your body needs.

5. The diet to lose weight fast is only a temporary measure and does not help you make permanent changes in your eating habits. Permanent changes are the only way to stay at your goal weight once you reach it. Fad diets encourage yo-yo dieting binge cycles of rapid weight loss and equally rapid weight gain. It's worse for your health and self-esteem if you're overweight all the time.

Regardless of what the promotional material says, these diets won't help you in the long run. The best way to maintain the weight loss is to eat a varied and healthy diet, not overeat, exercise regularly, and avoid fad diets.
